The state of Sur
The state of Sur is considered the most important state in the eastern region of the Sultanate of Oman. It is its regional capital, located 150 km southeast of the capital, Muscat. The Wilayat of Sur is located on the northern side of the eastern coast of the Sultanate. It is confined to the east between the Arabian Sea on one side and the Sea of Oman on the other. On the western side, it is adjacent to the Wilayat of Wadi Bani Khalid, to the north is the Wilayat of Quriyat, affiliated with the Muscat Governorate, and to the south it is adjacent to the Wilayats of Al Kamil, Al Wafi, and Jaalan Bani. Bu Ali and Jalan Bani Bu Hassan. It extends from Ras Al Hadd in the east to the Bani Jaber Mountains in the west, and from Tiwi in the north to Al Fulaij in the south. Its population is about 64 thousand and 988 people, residing in 112 villages and cities.
Sur was famous in the past and is still famous for its shipbuilding, fishing and maritime transport, and it has a long maritime history. It overlooks the sea from the east and is located in the far east of Amman. It is credited with its geographical location and the multiplicity of its regions, and the most beautiful area there is the Al Aija region, whose lighthouse is considered one of the oldest marine lighthouses in the Sultanate to guide ships to anchor on the shore. The state of Sur was famous in the open oceans and along the shores of the Gulf, South Africa, the Indian subcontinent and Asia. The Tyrian ships (the Ganja and the Mule) carried the name of Oman in the open seas and oceans. For thousands of years, Sur remained alive on its skills in sailing and trade, its audacity, and its docks. Its shipbuilding and sailing fleets dominated trade in the waters of the Gulf and beyond. Generations of major merchants dominated this trade, and the descendants of large and wealthy families still manage some of the largest Omani institutions and companies, and from the diversity of businesses and activities necessary to meet the country’s needs and future, their activity is no longer limited to trade only.
